I joined the Club over 11 years ago as a Receptionist working 22 hours a week, which fitted in with my childcare commitments. I knew the Club was more than just a health club – it offered a special working environment. I then moved to work in our Club restaurant, the Lake Room, where I have been working permanently since 2007. Whilst the key focus is always on providing excellent customer service, it’s a very sociable job. I really enjoy getting to know the Members, which is a big difference from working in a normal bar or restaurant. Communication is a big part of what I do. A working day can be tiring because we can be really busy, but I always go home with a sense of satisfaction. It makes me happy to know I have made someone’s day a little better.

To work here, you really need to be smartly presented, professional and customer-service focussed. Teamwork is really important. I feel lucky to work in such a beautiful working environment by the lake, and free on-site parking is a nice benefit of the job. I like the team I work with and the future here gets better and better. There are always changes going on to keep us fresh.


SUSANNA PEGRAM:

Started as: Part-time Creche Assistant
Now: Assistant Club Manager

I joined the Club over 12 years ago as a part-time Crèche Assistant. I had previously enjoyed its facilities as a member so I knew it was a special place. Within 18 months, I was promoted to Crèche Manager and the Club funded the NVQ training I needed for this role. After another 18 months, I was asked to manage Reception as well as the Crèche.I was then promoted to Operations Manager and took on a number of interim management roles, which gave me experience of running different departments. I am now Assistant Club Manager, overseeing the crèche, reception, membership sales and the annual black-tie balls, which are exciting events for the staff involved.

I like working for the Club because opportunities present themselves. Of course it is hard work and good customer service skills are important. The Club is open seven days a week and involves shift work, so you need to have flexibility and a willingness to work. If you make the effort, you will be noticed. You get out of it what you put in. It is a wonderful place to work.


COLIN ELLIOTT:

Started as: Bar staff
Now: Operations Manager

“I like the atmosphere here. It’s friendly and professional. I work with a great team and every day is different.”

I joined the Club over 11 years ago working full-time in the Bar. I really wanted to work in the Gym as a personal trainer and knew that I could transfer if I showed I was hard-working and professional. So I moved to the Gym as a Level Two Fitness Instructor after three months working in the Bar. I worked in the Gym for four years before looking to progress my career at the Club. After speaking to the Chief Executive, I became Duty Manager and took on a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. I quickly progressed to Health & Safety Manager before becoming Operations Manager.

I chose to progress my career at the Club because it is good at promoting from within. It’s a good place to develop a career. I also like the atmosphere here. It’s friendly and professional. I work with a great team and every day is different. To work here, you need to be friendly, hard-working and a team player. Everyone goes the extra mile here. That’s why our big events are such a success.


KATIE SARGEANT:

Started as: Part-Time Spa Therapist
Now: Senior Spa Therapist

"I have really enjoyed myself working here and each year gets better as the Club develops"

I work in the Spa here at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club, and have done since I joined in 2011 after getting my Beauty Diploma at College. I started off part-time but moved to being full-time four months later. I accepted the job at the Club because I liked the ethos of a members’ club and wanted to work with clients who return regularly. I also liked the fact that, because the Spa is smaller than some others, I would get better exposure to a variety of work.

There’s a good working atmosphere here – it’s modern and progressive. To work here, I think you need to be friendly and professional at all times, and that includes being well-presented and having a professional demeanour. Flexibility is important in a job with shift hours such as this, as are team-working skills. We support each other in our work here.

I have really enjoyed myself working here and each year gets better as the Club develops. I like working closely with my clients, who are lovely people. The Members really make my job enjoyable as they are so nice to work with. Last summer I was promoted to Senior Spa Therapist after speaking to my manager about career development opportunities. I’m really grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to develop the skills needed to run a spa on a day-to-day basis. "
