Roadchef is one of Britain's leading roadside service area businesses, operating at 30 Motorway and Major Trunk Road Service Area locations covering the length and breadth of the country. The company has been serving the needs of the travelling public for over 40 Years.
Famously, Roadchef are the proud owner and operators of Watford Gap, the first and most iconic MSA in the UK, which opened its doors on 2nd November 1959 and in 2009, celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
We also operate an impressive portfolio of leading catering, retail and accommodation brands from Costa and McDonald's to WHSmith and Days Inn, not to mention our own in house catering brands featuring The Fresh Food Cafe, serving piping hot meals every time from a contemporary food servery. All sites have leading oil company branded filling stations.
Roadchef was acquired by Antin Infrastructure Partners (“Antin IP”) on 30th September 2014. Antin IP is a leading independent European private equity firm specialising in infrastructure investments. Founded in 2007, Antin IP is wholly owned by its nine Partners and has a team of over 35 professionals comprising 15 nationalities. With over €3 billion in assets under management, Antin IP aims to create value through active management and a focused investment approach, concentrating on taking controlling stakes in infrastructure businesses in Europe.

Roadchef operates within the UK MSA sector and is managed by an experienced team led by Chief Executive Simon Turl, who has over 35 years experience in the hospitality sector, with the majority of this gained within the Motorway Service Area industry.
The Roadchef business now employs over 3,200 people, cares for over 50 million customer visits per year, serves a million breakfasts, 500,000 portions of fish and chips and five million coffees and its catering operation alone turns over £100 million per annum, out of a total turnover of £187 million.
Now under the ownership of Antin IP, Roadchef is embarking on a major investment programme across its portfolio to significantly improve its offering. Further improvements to catering and retail will be implemented alongside improvements to infrastructure including the all-important toilet facilities.
Roadchef is proud to have completed the first ever UK corporate franchise agreement with McDonald’s, which allowed us to add the famous golden arches to our offering. Under the agreement, Roadchef can offer McDonald’s food and drink at high street prices, bringing a unique, market leading and value-led branded offering to the motorway.
However, the biggest change to the company’s catering portfolio will see the eradication of the much-maligned Motorway Service Area free-flow restaurant. Taking learning’s from the airport industry and other retail environments, all Restbite outlets, which offer a traditional ‘servery on a tray rail’ approach to dining, will be converted to Roadchef’s own in house brand Fresh Food Café.
Fresh Food Café combines a contemporary branded food store with the latest back of house cooking equipment, which improves food quality, speed of service and continues to deliver value to customers. As the name suggests the focus is on fresh food and the menu includes many items not normally seen in a Motorway Service Area.
And finally, as a mark of the focus that Roadchef places on its people we are extremely proud to have been awarded “Investors in People Gold” accreditation for the way in which we manage, support and develop our people. Less than 100 companies in the UK hospitality industry have achieved this accolade and we are thrilled that the efforts of everyone in the business have been properly recognised.
