We pride ourselves in our award-winning beers, delicious fresh home-cooked food and service that feels like you’re spending time with friends at the kitchen table, with a great meal and a bottle of wine.

Our Story

In 1978 we shut out the world and made beer. At that time, no one was risking it all starting a traditional brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. Fast forward to today and we’re holding fast to our values and heading off on another exciting journey.  This time we’re defying convention by significantly expanding and investing in our diverse and distinctive collection of pubs and inns, with everything from bustling high-street pubs, cosy country inns and beautiful boutique hotels across the south and west of England.

Born In The 70's

In 1978, Butcombe Brewing Co. began. It was a time of cultural, social and political change, soundtracked by bands full of spit and anger riding the crest of the punk wave. Margaret Thatcher took the Tory leadership, the IRA waged war, the Yorkshire Ripper cast a long shadow over the North and the meaning of life was revealed as the number 42.

You see, at that time, no one was risking it all starting a traditional brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. But, nearly 40 years later, by staying true to our beliefs – and with a lot of hard graft – it looks like owning a resolutely traditional brewing company isn’t such a crazy idea after all. By going against the grain, to work intimately with it, we made our own statement with every pint. And what was true then is just as important today.

We have the same passion and purpose when it comes to our pubs and inns, each unique and distinctive, our growing group of pubs have their teams and our guests at their heart – it’s what makes them special.
