WHSmith currently operates over 1,300 stores, primarily in the UK, comprising 736 travel outlets and 615 high street stores (as of 31 August 2015).
WHSmith Travel stores sell a range of products to cater for people on the move or in need of a convenience offer. Travel’s typical customer has less time to browse and is more interested in purchasing food, drink and confectionery, as well as reading materials for a journey. Consequently, there is a limited demand for stationery product and the stock and layout of each Travel store reflects this.
As at 28 February 2015, the Travel business operated from 736 units in airports, railway stations, motorway service areas, hospitals and workplaces, including 155 units in international locations. At 28 February 2014, Travel operated from a total of 0.55m square feet of selling space (2013: 0.52m of square feet), with units ranging in size from 90 square feet to more than 6,000 square feet. Of the 585 UK Travel units, 149 are in airports, 126 in railway stations, 126 in motorway service areas (most of which are franchise units), 128 in hospitals and 56 in locations such as bus stations, workplaces and also our Funky Pigeon stores. Travel now operates from 155 international units in the Middle East, Australia, South-East Asia, India and Europe, and an additional 15 small kiosks in China, and 32 small kiosks in India.
