Business Manager - Bristol
Portishead Open Air Pool and Café Lido
Salary approximately £40,000, depending on qualifications and experience
Potential for annual bonus based on additional profit generation
Portishead Open Air Pool and Café Lido are situated in a stunning position on Portishead Esplanade, and benefit from considerable local community support as well as attracting visitors from much further away. It retains a strong media profile and is well connected to the wider UK lido network.
The site is run by a charity (Portishead Pool Community Trust – “the Trust”) who took on the management of the pool in 2009, after North Somerset Council drew up plans to close it. Café Lido, which adjoins the pool, is a separate trading entity the profits of which support the running of the pool. The Trust has increased annual swimmer numbers from under 10,000 before 2009 to around 40,000 or more each year, and it is committed to further growth. Estimated Café Lido visitor numbers are in the region of 35,000 per year. The pool receives no regular subsidy from the public purse. It is funded primarily from the sale of swim tickets and income from Cafe Lido.
There is a staff team of around 30 at peak season, across the café and lifeguard teams, and the Trust benefits from a large number of volunteers who take on a variety of roles year-round.
The pool opens for heated swimming from April to October (and over Christmas and New Year) and opens on a reduced hours basis for cold water swimming from October to April. Café Lido is open throughout the year – every day in Summer and 4 or 5 days per week from October to April.
Moving into the 2024 season we are recruiting for a hands on, entrepreneurial business manager, with strong staff and / or volunteer management experience, leadership ability, facilities management experience and budget management experience to assume overall management of both arms of the business. The successful candidate could come from a leisure services, visitor attraction management, event management, hospitality or any other background that has developed those areas of skill and experience. The business has a planned programme of renewal and repair, so solid project management experience, forward planning and a willingness to lead through a period of change is vital.
Reporting to the board of trustees, the business manager will line manage all staff employed by both pool and café and will be supported by senior operations volunteers. The post-holder will be ultimately responsible for ensuring that the highest standards of customer care, health and safety, facility presentation and service delivery are achieved in both the pool and café. The successful candidate will need to be a pro-active self-starter who can consistently motivate themselves and the wider team in a distinctly non-corporate environment. Revenue generation and income diversification will be key requirements.
Given the nature of the business this role is not 9 to 5, Monday to Friday and flexibility regarding working some bank holiday, weekend and evening hours will be required. There is scope for some of the work to be carried out from home although the majority will be on site – particularly between April and October.
The vacancy will close when an appointable candidate accepts an offer.
