What does a Trainee Tutor opportunity involve?

Our Trainee tutors are welcomed onto our Graduate Development Programme which is designed to prepare individuals with the skills and attributes to become Outdoor Education Tutors. During the programme each Trainee Tutor will work towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship qualification.

Alongside your studies, you will build experience working with primary and secondary schools to deliver curriculum-linked activities that will increase students understanding of nature and the environment.  Following successful completion of this programme, more than 80% of our apprentice tutors go on to be employed as permanent tutors with the Field Studies Council!

What will you gain?

  • Learn to provide active outdoor learning in a variety of environments, weather conditions and terrain, being able to deliver standard courses to visiting primary and secondary groups.
  • Learn more about how to work with and support teaching staff in course delivery, involving welcoming groups and preparing classrooms, resources, equipment, and IT
  • Support in the delivery of community and outreach activities and events
  • Be a part of our duty system that requires evening or overnight cover – an important part of the service provision to our groups and learners as well as a core part of working in this industry
  • Build your skills in adaptability as you navigate working with new people and adapt to new environments
  • The opportunity to be based in a couple of different Field Studies Council locations during your time with us – each centre has a unique learning experience to offer you and those you deliver learning experiences to
  • The opportunity to learn alongside experienced teams as well as your fellow cohort of Trainee Tutors, building an invaluable network of professional contacts along the way

Where will you be based?

You will work and learn alongside our education teams of likeminded people who have a great team ethic at our Field Studies Council centres in England.

Each centre is set in a beautiful and unique locations close to amazing fieldwork sites! You can find out more about them here:

https://www.field-studies-council.org/centres/

A condition of the apprenticeship is that half of the time is spent in England, but we will look to develop your skills and experience across the organisation where appropriate. While we will ask your preference on where you would like to be based and take this into consideration, we will ultimately look to place you at a centre according to our business needs and your development objectives, so your placement location can’t be guaranteed. There will also likely to be the need to move to another one of our locations at some point in the duration of your fixed term contract. This will allow you to learn alongside a different and experienced team while also gaining that essential experience in diverse outdoor environments.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for individuals who are educated to degree level in Science, Geography, Environmental Studies or a closely allied discipline. In addition, you’ll have:

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for being in the outdoor environment
  • The ability to use standard office software, social media and SMART technology to effectively support learning.
  • A great work ethic where aptitude and attitude are key
  • A natural pride in your work and impact
  • A flexible and adaptive approach able to perform using your own initiative both independently and as a team player
  • A professional approach to all that you do
  • Empathy with the aims and objectives of Field Studies Council
  • A committed and proactive approach to personal development; motivated to learn new skills and overcome new challenges
