40 hrs per week including attending a one day a week course in horticulture, post probationary period.

Job Description:

The Course & Grounds Department is a team consisting of 20 professional and highly motivated individuals who pride themselves on the maintenance and upkeep of the prestigious estate. The grounds of the Club include an 18 hole golf course, four croquet lawns, thirty tennis courts, padel and squash courts as well as the gardens. It is through the efforts of the Grounds team that the Club’s members are rewarded year on year with award winning sports surfaces and stunning seasonal and permanent landscaping around the Club.

The Role & Working Arrangements

As an Apprentice Gardener your working hours at the Club will be 6am to 2:30. The garden apprentice will be required to assist in the skilled care, maintenance and development of the horticultural features and garden at the Club. The garden apprentice will be required to undertake and attend a relevant part-time course in horticulture.

Key result areas

  • Horticultural maintenance and development
  • Garden maintenance to a high standard – including weeding, mulching, edging, raking, digging over, staking and tying in, pruning, dead heading, bed preparation, and tidying.
  • Vegetable growing in the raised bed garden.
  • Seasonal propagation and growing on.
  • Composting and mulching.
  • Bed renovation and garden development where necessary.
  • Maintaining areas to enhance biodiversity and wildlife including meadows, wooded areas, and grass areas.
  • Lawn maintenance.
  • The efficient and safe use, care and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
  • General site maintenance including pathway and gutters.
  • Participation in training to develop a wide range of skills.
  • Support all sections of the department including sports surface maintenance.

Equipment

  • Ensure all tools and equipment are used correctly, efficiently and safely in keeping with current Health & Safety practice.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned, maintained and repaired where possible and report faults and losses.
  • Return all tools to their correct place when finished using them.

Health and safety

  • Carry out all duties in accordance with any relevant Health and Safety legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, paying particular attention to the colleagues, members and public safety.
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.
  • Operate the machinery in a safe manner in accordance with the Clubs and Safety Policy, the Codes of Practice for safe handling and manufacturer guidelines. Machinery should not be operated unless apprentice is properly trained.

Personal development

  • The post holder must also be accountable for their own development through the appraisal process seeking out opportunities to learn new skills.
  • The post holder will undertake a part-time horticultural course within London, and any other training courses identified throughout the placement.
  • Occasionally situations may arise that require the post-holder to perform other duties or tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Club.
