We are looking for a Head of Safety Health Environment and Quality to promote a culture of health, safety, continuous improvement and environmental effectiveness across the charity, its communities and operations.

We are a leading Sports, Leisure and Fitness operator and a registered charity with over 60 dynamic venues offering mainstream and specialist sports and leisure facilities. We also have some exciting brands such as INTENCITY (HIIT fitness studio concept).

The Role:

The Head of SHEQ will be in charge of monitoring all safety-related systems, including risk assessments and operating plans, and developing and leading the successful implementation of a sustainability strategy. The post holder will chiefly oversee the charity’s portfolio of external accreditations including ISO and Quest.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Advise the Leadership teams on the direction of audit/compliance and quality standards and, via reports and presentations, alert them to development in legislation and best practice
  • Define and manage statistics related to the Charity’s performance and ensure, through analysis of the information, a culture of safety, effectiveness and continuous improvement is developed
  • Develop detailed operational business improvement plans, which will ensure effectiveness and value for money in accordance with the company’s strategic aims and that meet contractual obligations
  • Ensure the charity is legally compliant with all health, safety and other relevant legislation
  • Oversee the continuous improvement and successful implementation of all safety and operational systems including normal operating procedures, emergency action plans, facility standards audits and risk management procedures
  • Monitor and investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and serious incidents to discover causes, identify trends and improve operational practice
  • Oversee insurance claims between management & broker
  • Conducting strategic analysis of energy usage to identify areas for improvement
  • Oversee the preparation and implementation of new energy saving and control initiatives and measure the performance of initiatives to ensure effectiveness
  • Develop a management plan to support operational teams in managing and reducing energy use
  • Leading on utility procurement and bill validation
  • Producing annual budgets for site utility costs
  • Produce action plans to improve performance where KPIs show deficiencies in current processes
  • Working with clients to achieve their carbon reduction goals, including the development of funding applications where applicable e.g. Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme
  • Develop and lead an effective EHS audit strategy
  • Establish positive relations with existing Clients and partners to gain confidence and become a trusted advocate
  • Oversee the successful management and retention of existing business accreditations such as Quest and ISO
  • Prepare and deliver in-depth reporting of own area of responsibility to the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Trustees

 

Experience/Skills and attributes:

  • Thorough and current understanding of relevant topics including civil and criminal law, health and safety management and technical advances (Essential)
  • Ability to interpret Health and Safety and other relevant legislation (Essential)
  • Ability to produce written policy and explain complex concepts succinctly (Essential)
  • Highly developed political awareness and reputation management skills (Essential)
  • Project management skills to enable the effective co-ordination of multi-disciplinary project teams (Essential)
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualified/member (Essential)
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent (Desirable)
  • Broad knowledge and experience in the leisure sector (Desirable)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of people (Desirable)
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership experience (Essential)
  • Active affiliation with appropriate networks and organisations and ongoing community involvement (Desirable)
