YHA Black Sail

We are looking to recruit a Duty Manager & Team Member for YHA Black Sail.  These two job opportunities are offered with staff accommodation and would suit a couple due to the nature of the accommodation (shared bedroom with double bed).  Staff accommodation is charged at £58.52 per week. Due to the location of the site, both candidates must hold a UK driving license and be willing to drive our YHA vehicle on off-road terrain.

Rate of Pay - £9.50 per hour (Team Member) & £10.65 per hour (Duty Manager) - Rates if pay will be reviewed in line with the government new National living wage from 1st March

Hours – 25-42.5 per week (Team Member) and 25-42.5 per week (Duty Manager)

If you want to get away from it all and catch a true taste of the Lake District, then Black Sail really is the hostel for you.

YHA Black Sail is situated in a remote wooded valley and surrounded by fells, ridges, and famous peaks. It is off-grid with power coming from solar power and even collects its own drinking water and so remote, its only accessible to guests on foot!

Previous hospitality experience would be an advantage but a passion for the remoteness of these locations is essential, off-grid living is not for the faint hearted.  There is no mobile signal and no internet.

Both role require flexibility to cover different shifts and tasks.

Team Member Skills and Experience:

It’s an advantage but not essential that our team members have worked in a face-to-face role with customers previously. Experience** in hospitality or customer service is desirable.

Duties vary so good communication skills, excellent timekeeping and basic IT skills are advantages. A food safety qualification is desirable but not essential.

Knowledge and understanding of YHA’s core purpose and experience of working in a team are beneficial.

Team member role responsibilities:

Our team members cover a wide range of customer-facing duties throughout the hostel, delivering an excellent service to all guests and visitors so they have a great experience at YHA.

Your day-to-day duties may include:

  • working on reception, providing information about the hostel and local area
  • carrying out cleaning and housekeeping duties
  • preparing food in the kitchen
  • serving food and drinks front of house

It’s important to note that the role can be physically demanding; you’ll be standing for extended periods of time, required to make bunk beds and clean guest accommodation to a high standard.

Duty Manager Skills and Experience:

It’s an advantage but not essential that our duty managers have worked in a face-to-face role with customers previously. Experience** in hospitality or customer service would be advantageous, including the management and delivery of a quality service.

Food safety level 2 and APLH level 2 qualifications would be desirable but not essential.  Experience working knowledge of managing varying pressures, including significant peaks in workload demands and experience of managing a team is essential.

Knowledge and understanding of YHA’s core purpose and experience of working in a team are beneficial.

Duty Manager role responsibilities:

Our duty managers are responsible for supporting the management of an operational budget and delivery of KPI’s, supporting with a wide range of customer facing duties across the hostel, delivering an excellent service to all guests and visitors, giving them a great experience of YHA.

Your day-to-day duties may include:

  • directing and supporting team members working on reception
  • carrying out cleaning and housekeeping duties
  • working in the kitchen preparing food
  • serving food and drinks

Our duty managers deputise for the Hostel/Deputy Manager, managing the hostel’s daily operation in their absence.
