Activity Team Member - Clifton, York

YHA York are looking to recruit a Activity Team Member for 25-42.5 hours per week.

What can YHA offer you?

YHA York is somewhere a little different, certainly not your average office. YHA offers a fantastic benefits package including:

  • We pay £9.50 per hour - rising to £10.42 from 1st March 2023
  • You will get access to YHA’s staff discount and cash back portal
  • Free YHA Membership each year
  • 10 nights free hostel stays per year for you and up to 3 friends or family

There’s lots more benefits to working for YHA so please visit our YHA Jobs website to find out more.

What will you be doing as a Activity Team Member?

Our activity team members cover a wide range of customer-facing duties throughout the hostel, delivering an excellent service to all guests and visitors so they have a great experience at YHA.

This role concentrates predominantly on the activity aspects of our hostel, but you may be asked to assist in other hostel departments. Here are some of the things you may be working on:

  • Deliver best practice in safety by adhering to YHA standards, risk assessments and relevant external regulations as required. You will balance the need for safety with creating optimal learning outcomes through challenging and enjoyable experiences.
  • Maximise learning outcomes by constantly adapting delivery to meet the needs of customers, reviewing activities and proactively encouraging feedback from groups and leaders alike to encourage engagement, service improvements and business retention.
  • Liaise with group leaders to assist them in their role and to develop a mutually supportive relationship to enable them to contribute to activity delivery.
  • You’ll ensure that all equipment is used appropriately, logged and recorded and maintained to the highest standard to ensure functionality and availability, reporting any faults or damage to a member of the hostel’s management team.

This role requires weekend and bank holiday working, early starts and evening working – all on a rota basis.

It’s important to note that the role can be physically demanding; you’ll be standing for extended periods of time, required to make bunk beds and clean guest accommodation to a high standard.

What Skills and Experience do you need to be an Activity Team Member?

It’s an advantage but not essential that our activity team members have worked in a face-to-face role with customers previously. Experience** in hospitality or customer service is desirable but not essential.

Good communication skills are an advantage whilst excellent time keeping is essential.

Knowledge and understanding of YHA’s core purpose and experience of working in a team are beneficial.

The seasonal role can often require longer periods of time outdoors so energy, enthusiasm and a fondness for the outdoors is an advantage.

Experience of working with young people in either a volunteering or paid role is desirable.

**We value lived experience just as much as previous skills and knowledge. We offer a robust induction, ongoing training, and further development, however, some of our roles will have further skills requirements. It’s an advantage but not essential that our team members have experience volunteering or working with other people.

How do you apply?

Submit your CV and complete the application form (it’s a short one, we promise!). If you need any assistance, please visit the contact page on the YHA Jobs website and someone from the team will help you.
