Internal Communications Manager -

Summary

We’re looking for an experienced internal communications professional to join our award-winning team. You’ll be responsible for planning and delivery of internal communications on a range of projects and areas across the National Trust’s cause of Nature, Beauty and History For Everyone, For Ever.
You’ll need to show that you’re confident and experienced in working with multiple stakeholders to senior levels, managing communications across a number of complex projects, and creating top-quality content. You’ll have the opportunity to help shape the way we communicate with thousands of staff and volunteers, and tell the stories of the wonderful work they do.
This is a fixed-term contract opportunity to cover maternity leave, for a period of approximately 12 months.

What it's like to work here

You will be part of an internal communications network that includes our national team and regional consultants. We’re a close-working unit who support each other in working across all parts of the Trust’s strategy. Our approach is values-driven and focused on achieving a clear set of goals that define a high-performing internal communications team.

While many of our team are based around our national offices in Swindon and spend time working there, we’re a national network who do much of our teamwork virtually and connect with people all over the Trust. Your contractual location will be our Swindon offices, however there will be an opportunity to explore and agree hybrid working arrangements which could include some home working as well as working out of Trust offices in other parts of the country. Wherever you’re based, some travel will be needed to attend occasional face-to-face team meetings and to connect with Trust people and places.

What you'll be doing

You will be planning, creating, and delivering communications for staff and volunteers across a number of areas of the National Trust’s work.

You’ll be reporting to a senior internal communications manager who shapes the strategic internal communications approach for the areas you’re working on. You’ll also be working as part of a broader Communications & Marketing team to align our campaigns and messaging to staff, volunteers, visitors, supporters, media and broader communities. You’ll help make sure all of our people can be confident advocates for the cause of the Trust to the outside world.

You’ll work with stakeholders to senior level in all parts of the Trust. The National Trust cares for coastlines and forests, historic mansions, traditional back-to-back workers’ cottages and even the Beatles’ childhood homes. Our people include curators, countryside rangers, retailers, visitor welcome specialists, and so many other wonderful areas of expertise. So the work of the communicators who tell their stories is as rich and varied as can be.

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for an experienced internal communications professional who can quickly immerse themselves and start delivering on a number of fronts. Your CV will demonstrate experience in a full range of internal communications skills – stakeholder management, audience insight, strategic understanding, planning, content creation, channel management, and measuring impact.
We’re also looking for someone with an inquisitive spirit and creative mind, to be a vital member of our team. We live by our and the Trust’s values.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what is possible in this role. For this position we’re looking for someone who:
  • Has knowledge of effectively internally communicating in a large, complex organisation
  • Understands how to create and deliver compelling and engaging ‘cut through’ internal communications to different audiences
  • Has experience of providing support and advice to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management. Has the gravitas and experience to give credible advice and inspire confidence at all levels and can provide compelling and well thought-out solutions to complex problems.
  • Is able to identify, craft and deliver key messages, narratives and information in succinct and engaging ways.
  • Is able to cultivate and maintain good working relationships and manage demanding and challenging clients
  • Has strong technical knowledge of key communication channels and content
  • Shows high levels of creativity when working at both a strategic and tactical level

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
