What it's like to work here

Longshaw Estate is a beautiful place to explore the Peak District. From babbling brooks and ancient woodland to the vast views of the moorland, we welcome a diverse range of visitors all looking to experience the outdoors. 
The history of the estate can be seen through the Victorian features and there is a wide variety of conservation work undertaken here, including caring for migratory birds, thriving fungi, and working to protect the wider Peak District landscape. 
You’ll be working mainly outside (weather depending) with an experienced team of both staff and volunteers, many with an educational background. The Moorland Discovery Centre has been the base of explorations for hundreds of school trips and educational visits—the value of learning outside the classroom is not something we underestimate. We have a variety of games and activities which will run in the MDC grounds during the summer months and form the cornerstone of our summer programming.

What you'll be doing

As an Active Outdoors Assistant you’ll have a passion for delivering great active experience in the outdoors. 
As part of our Come Out and Play summer programme, You’ll be integral to helping the team run our  activities in the grounds of the Moorland discovery Centre each Tuesday and Wednesday of the school summer holidays. 
Combining your excellent customer service skills with knowledge and ability to instruct others in safe activities, you'll help our visitors access our Active Outdoors offers as well as ensuring that equipment is maintained and stored appropriately. 
There will be a variety of duties which range from welcoming and engaging with visitors and families, providing great information about the property and the activities on offer, setting up equipment, measuring participation and generally supporting the property to enable its Active Outdoors offer to be the best visitors experience it can be.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role we are look for someone who has: 
  • Experience of, or interest in, working in an outdoor setting delivering active experiences to our visitors 
  • A positive, can-do attitude with people-focused customer service skills 
  • Confidence engaging with families of all ages taking part in sports activities during the summer holidays 
  • Understanding of different access requirements and how to assist visitors 
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team 
  • Availability to work Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer holidays
