Summary

Our friendly Collections and House team care for and present Dunham Massey to its full potential. The Collections & House Officer is responsible for supervising our day to day offer, getting the house ready for visitors, organising our friendly team of volunteers, and contributing to collections management and care. 

  • Dunham Massey cares for one of the largest and most diverse Collections in the National Trust; you can be part of looking after this piece of history 
  • As one of two Collections and House Officers, the successful candidate will share responsibilities with the existing C&H Officer. The advertised role will have particular focus on people management and day to day operations of the open offer, including the presentation of the house for visitors, balanced with both front of house and behind-the-scenes conservation work, to improve stored collections. You’ll also be supervising Collections volunteers to help the team achieve their goals.

This role is fixed term for 12 months. It is a full-time opportunity, meaning you will work 5 days per week. This will include some weekend working on a rotational basis, alongside all members of the Collections team.?

What it's like to work here

Upon successful recruitment into this role, for a fixed time the Collections and House Team at Dunham Massey will comprise 6 Collections Assistants, 2 Collections & House Officers, a Collections & House Manager and a Property Curator. The two Collections and House Officers will work together seamlessly, sharing the responsibilities as described in the role profile. The successful candidate will be focused on volunteer and staff supervision, visitor operations, and will of course be hands-on with the care and display of the house and its collection, including robust collections management record keeping.  

Dunham Massey is approximately 10 miles south of central Manchester and three miles south of Altrincham. Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford, gave it to the National Trust in 1976. The Hall sits within a magnificent 300 acre deer park alongside one of Britain’s finest winter gardens. The estate extends over 3000 acres and the site attracts over 500,000 visitors a year. What you'll be doing

You’ll be responsible for the opening of the house, ensuring appropriate resources are in place to be able to provide consistently excellent service for our visitors. You’ll enjoy working with people as you undertake duty management responsibilities, supporting a team of house volunteers to deliver the day-to-day operations of an open house. 

You'll supervise the team of Collections Assistants responsible for implementing conservation routines, preventive conservation and annual deep cleaning programme to ensure excellent standards of care, delivering strategies to improve conservation. You’ll be involved in improving our Collections Management System (CMS) records and tackling different types of collections management tasks required by such a large and diverse collection. You will also complete essential compliance tasks required for the mansion.

Who we're looking for

  • Knowledge of customer care and approaches to optimising visitor enjoyment.
  • Good team player with day to day line management and supervisory skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills enabling relationships to be maintained.
  • Some knowledge and experience of managing costs and expenditure.
  • Willing to contribute original or imaginative ways to make elements of the collection or house that are difficult to reach accessible to all visitors.
