Project Manager - Uckfield

Summary

We're looking for a Project Manager to join the team at Sheffield Park and Garden, who can inspire confidence in the team and apply their technical knowledge to a range of different tasks required to lead on a large project. If you're up to the challenge, then we want to hear from you!

This is a fixed-term contract/secondment opportunity until the end of August 2024. The working hours are 22.5 hours per week.

***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE***

Our colleagues work for the National Trust in many locations and sometimes don't have easy access to internal vacancy listings. Using the internet ensures we can reach as many of our colleagues as possible. We appreciate that this can be frustrating for external talent. Do note that some roles are released externally after an initial period of time.

What it's like to work here

Sheffield Park and Garden is a horticultural work of art formed through centuries of landscape design, with influences of 'Capability' Brown and Humphry Repton. Four lakes form the heart of the garden, with paths circulating through the glades and wooded areas surrounding them. Each owner has left their impression, which can still be seen today in the layout of the lakes and the spectacular autumn colour created by the many different tree and shrub species from around the world.

The historic parkland forms a larger footprint for the Sheffield Park estate and is bordered by the River Ouse. Dating back several centuries, it has had many uses including a deer park and WWII camp, and is now grazed with livestock.

We're a busy property featuring in the top 10 of the Trust’s most visited pay for entry properties. We attract thousands of visitors with our seasonal garden displays, historic parkland and programmed events and activities. We welcome people with plenty of shared ideas and energy to join us. This is a great opportunity to become part of a supportive team in a lively place you’ll love working.

What you'll be doing

We are embarking on a project that will create a garden within a garden, a space for people to connect with nature and each other in tranquil and beautiful surroundings. Seasonal planting will add colour and texture, with seating and shelter to create spaces for solitude or togetherness. It will be a planted oasis, within an often busy garden, that is beneficial to mental health and provides a natural route to wellbeing and improved quality of life.

Your role will be to be the voice of the project. You’ll help the project understand the definition of success, scope, and outcomes so that everyone is clear about what they are doing and why. You’ll do this through organising and facilitating the project meetings, and communicating with all stream leads and members of the project team as well as stakeholders. You’ll take responsibility for the business case, working to bring the project in on time, to cost, and of the right quality. You’ll ensure the project is delivering on the project client’s brief and work closely with the project sponsor to ensure the project is delivering for the organisation.

Who we're looking for

At the National Trust, we do projects in order to deliver benefits which in turn take us closer to delivering our strategy.  Projects can't therefore be entrusted to just anyone. Project management is recognised within the Trust as a professional skill.

A project manager is responsible for ensuring that their project is delivered on time, within budget and to the agreed quality, to maximise the chances of us delivering these strategic benefits.

To do this you must have a good grasp of the technical aspects of project management - from estimating to risk management, change control, procurement, finance etc - but also the ability to lead, inspire, influence and manage people. The best project managers recognise that successful projects are a team effort.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
