Commercial Finance Manager - Leeds

You will help lead, shape and drive the future strategy of ASDA's Commercial business during a global pandemic, at a time when our customers' needs and shopping habits are changing at a rapid rate, arguably quicker than ever before, and the market looks to respond.

At the same time, there are significant political and regulatory changes which are having a major impact on our business. For example, Brexit is affecting our supply chain, workforce and prices and a new government policy aimed at tackling obesity will fundamentally change how we sell products which are high in fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS).

 

Your Role

This vacancy is part of the Commercial Finance Team and business partners the Food Trading function, supporting decision making as well as challenging and providing insight into all aspects of financial performance (Sales, Gross Profit, Waste, Working Capital and Cost of Goods Sold / Price Investment).

The team plays a key role in ensuring we deliver the company plan; business partnering the trading and supply teams to provide commercial insight and support.  The team's accountabilities span setting the strategic direction for the team through to supporting and influencing decision making on range, price and supplier strategy.  Trading finance play a pivotal role in supporting the digital transformation of the function through development and deployment of new tools to enable more effective decision-making.

This is a dynamic and varied role with significant exposure to the Edible Grocery Vice President and the Senior Directors they support.  To be successful in role you will need to build a strong commercial understanding of the areas and to build strong relationships with the teams you are supporting.  

You will be responsible for stimulating strategic decision making, understanding and driving improvements in the commercial performance, supporting the relevant trading priorities and driving financial discipline and accountability for processes.

 

  • Drive delivery of the Plan together with the Senior Managers & Senior Directors of the Edible Grocery categories. Assessing risks to the plan and working with teams to formulate and deliver action plans
  • Identifying & supporting on opportunities to continue to grow sales, margin & cash performance, taking the lead on all projects which are relevant to this area
  • Own the consolidated reporting & forecasting for Edible Grocery, providing tailored insight for and leading the monthly reviews with the Edible Grocery Leadership Team.
  • Financial control of forecasting and planning process as well as ensuring there are no surprises during month end cycles
  • Support the finance transformation programme and central programme to improve analytics in trading (Digital Trader). Support the development and rollout of new analytics to support ranging decisions (both seasonal and All Year Round), maximising supplier strategies, promotional planning and targeted price investment decisions.
  • Lead the range review and seasonal autopsy process for Edible Grocery, using new analytical software to independently appraise performance, identify opportunities and agree changes pre new ranging decisions.
  • Work alongside the Snr Finance Manager in continuing the transition to full end to end profit understanding, insight & decision making.

 

Key Attributes:

 

  • The role would suit a qualified accountant or individuals from a strategy or analytics background, interested in working in retail.
  • Broad commercial awareness
  • Helpful to have experience in more advanced analytical software e.g. Alteryx / Tableau /Power BI
  • The ability to provide accurate, timely information to a high quality with attention to detail within a fast-paced environment.
  • Confident and pro-active with the ability to challenge senior stakeholders and an ability to influence at senior levels.
  • A growth mind set to invest in the development opportunities available both technically and personally
