ICT Senior Network Engineer (Full-Time / Permanent)​ - London​ & Whipsnade

Role Profile

ZSL is seeking a skilled Senior Network Engineer to design, maintain and manage the extensive network across our two Zoos. The Senior Network Engineer will be responsible for supporting the routing, switching, wireless and firewalls as well as other infrastructure within our sites.

Due to the purpose of our locations ZSL operates a large campus style network and the candidate will need to be able to comprehend, document and propose improvements to the existing infrastructure as well as design for future changes to the network. You will be required to keep up to date with emerging technologies and ensure the network can accommodate and adapt to these accordingly.

The Senior Network Engineer will work closely with the wider ICT team on projects as well as security monitoring, configuration, and remediation of any threats detected both within and external to the network. This is very much a hands on role and the successful candidate will be expected to manage their time accordingly to balance the demands of the day-to-day operations of the network as well as delivering projects, performing essential maintenance and patching of network equipment, and ensuring all configuration management and documentation is kept up to date.

The candidate will carry out ongoing tuning, hardware maintenance and resource optimisation, proactively identifying potential bottlenecks and problems and work with external suppliers to design and implement solutions and resolve issues. The Senior Network Engineer will be managing support contracts with third parties and ensuring all critical infrastructure has an active support and maintenance contract in place.

Person Specification
The successful candidate will ideally have: 

  • Excellent knowledge of enterprise networking infrastructure architecture, configuration and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of network design topologies, STP, OSPF, WAN and VPN
  • Excellent understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and other network protocols
  • Excellent understanding of the OSI model
  • Excellent understanding of modern network design principles and security standards
  • Ability to use or onboard a wide variety of networking technologies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to collate and present information clearly and succinctly
  • Considerable working experience with enterprise LAN/WAN networks
  • Experience in troubleshooting, fault and performance debugging, diagnostics and remediation
  • Experienced background and considerable experience in enterprise firewall configuration and management
  • Experience with Cisco ASA and Palo Alto Firewall Management
  • Experience in HPE Aruba Networking
  • Experienced background in VPN configuration and management including working with external suppliers delivering services
  • Enterprise management of campus scale network deployments
  • Microsoft Windows operating systems – Windows 10; Microsoft Windows networking configuration and management
  • Advanced TCP/IP networking concepts, including routing protocols and design

Please note: Whilst the role is based at our main office in Regent's Park the functional nature of the job may require the post holder to also to travel to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Dunstable. You may also be required to work occasional evenings and weekends and carry out visits to external agencies, consultancies and organisations as and when necessary; time off in-lieu will be given.
