Animal Behaviour Researcher (Full-Time / 18 week Internship)

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile

We are offering an excellent opportunity to gain experience with one of the UK’s leading conservation research organisations. The successful candidate will assist the animal department in conducting required data collection on animal activity and behaviour at ZSL London zoo and the production of an evaluation report.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect baseline data on activity budgets covering agreed priority species.
  • Collect data on sleeping patterns using direct observations and cameras.
  • Collation of anecdotal behaviour information as directed, by interview and retrieval from ZIMS animal records database.
  • Compilation of data collected in an appropriate format, performing analysis as requested and assisting with report production.
  • Any other activities as agreed.

Person Specification

  • Proficient skills in using MS office packages, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Strong research and communication skills.
  • Have general knowledge of and familiarity with behavioural data collection of animals.
  • Ideally some previous experience carrying out animal behavior research.
  • Previous experience using ZIMS is beneficial.

Please note: This role will require extensive evening and weekend work.

We will also need candidates to start in mid October.
