About the job:
For all own brand Food and NEG products including those sourced via direct import and licensed, this job will develop and implement the legal label policies & lead and execute the specifications management process to support 100% accurate and legal labelling and specifications for new and existing products.

The ins & outs:
Lead Asda Legal Labelling Policy and the Product Specification process:
  • Review legislation and translate into clear policy that can be simply executed in the business
  • Managing the compliance of own label specifications ensuring plans in place to address any non-conformance
  • Controlling will for outsource service provider ensuring statement of requirements (SOR) are met
  • Prioritise additional work load for outsource provider such as specifications quota
  • Be a key decision maker on all legal labelling issues that arise within the business, acting as a point of reference for marketing, Trading, Asda Brand, Compliance, legal, and on line ensuring that the needs of the business, customer and legal requirements are balanced effectively
  • Cover all aspects of own brand Food and NEG to include Packaging claims, e.g. Health claims, marketing and/ or provenance claims, legal name, country of origin, legal symbols e.g. health marks, trademarks and licensing advice.
  • Provide a governance role to ensure that all forms of communication of Asda Brand products are legal by advising teams on the correct processes and by conducting a programme to check that the controls in place are effective
  • Support Own Brand Product Development
  • Lead the specification management process ensuring that due diligence requirements are met at all times through the correct training, system development, supplier development and reporting tools
  • Working with the Own Brand Governance manager / Company Nutritionist to ensure that any brand guidelines are in line with legal labelling policy eg health icons
  • To provide internal refresher training on legal labelling to the Asda Brand product and technical teams and suppliers where appropriate
  • To ensure that all Pigs and Pentics comply with the correct legal labelling policy
  • Horizon Scanning -Monitoring and reporting legislative and competitor developments
  • To ensure that the business is provided with up and coming changes in legislation and anticipate how these changes will impact the business, suggesting recommendations for effective business implementation.
  • Influence key stakeholders in the business on the impact of changing legislation and put forward a clear business case for change
  • Influence External Policy
  • Working with external bodies/NGOSs to influence legal labelling policy and drive through change representing Asda position e.g. Brexit. Ensuring that Asda maintain an’ advantage’ and remain in line with industry whilst doing the right thing for the customer
  • Working alongside Regulatory agencies e.g. FSA, DOH, Defra to influence, advise on Nutrition labelling, allergens and general food labelling
  • Responding to government and NGO consultations

  • What you’ll need:
  • Degree in Consumer protection or equivalent - Legal labelling and food compositional standards are heavily legislated
  • Experience in trading standard/ enforcement or in an industry related food/NEG labelling role
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • A talent for translating labelling policy for different audiences is crucial
  • Self-motivated, organised and ability to prioritise
  • Effective influencing skills and ability to work cross functionally
  • Fluent in product specific requirements, specialist areas and general food law principles and maintains this knowledge to a certifiable level
  • Proven capability in delivering policy through others
  • History of delivering reputational risk management and due diligence requirements for Brands retailer/ own brand
