Job Details

The Sands Centre in Carlisle, North West England is looking for a new Chief Technician - Sound to lead the venue's theatre and events programme. The venue is operated by GLL, the UK's largest public leisure operator and a charitable social enterprise. The Sands Centre plays host to over 180 shows and events every year including West End theatre productions, ballet and opera, not to mention major rock, pop and comedy artists and the region's biggest pantomime. We also host a variety of corporate conferences and exhibitions. This role offers the chance to contribute to the cultural output of the region's biggest and best-known arts and events venue.

Chief Technician is a crucial role that ensures all our shows and events run to time, to spec, to budget and to the highest safety standards. You'll provide technical leadership and expertise to our casual stage crew as well as deputising for the Technical and Stage Manager. You'll thrive on variety and be unfazed by the size and scope of events that we host whilst being able to work around a lack of fly tower.

With significant professional experience as a sound engineer, most likely gained within a theatre or large events venue, we would expect you to have relevant industry qualifications and experience of the following:

  • working at heights
  • rope rescues
  • PAT testing
  • PA installation and sound design
  • Operating both digital and analogue sound desks
  • a degree in technical theatre or media production
Keeping calm under pressure and able to lead, inspire and effectively communicate with a team in a fast-paced, energetic and demanding environment amongst a range of personalities will also be key.

In return, we offer a range of benefits that you'd expect from the UK's largest leisure provider:

  • Ride to work scheme
  • Pension
  • Discounted membership at our leisure centres
  • Holiday apartments via society membership (after qualifying period)
  • Career pathways
  • Ongoing training and development

If you have the passion and skills for this role, apply now.

All pay rates are subject to skills, experience, qualifications, age and location.

To be shortlisted for the role, internal applicants will need to demonstrate their commitment to GLL by becoming a Society member where eligible.
