Fusion Lifestyle are currently seeking a Deputy Manager for our Outdoor Education Centre, Blue Peris Mountain Centre, which is situated in the heart of Snowdonia in Wales. Blue Peris is a residential Centre which offers a wide range of outdoor education / adventure activities which use the local environment. These include Kayaking, Sea Level Traversing, Gorge Walking, and Underground Exploration. The Centre offers a wide range of programmes and its clients range from primary education, secondary education, universities students and adults alike.

Fusion Lifestyle, a highly experienced sports and leisure management organisation formed in 2000, provides sport and leisure services in over 90 facilities nationwide, working in partnership with local authorities and a range of voluntary organisations and schools. Your role will be to develop, deliver and manage courses on the site and to be proactive in the Centre’s development. You will take an active part in the day to day operations and take charge of the Centre in the Manager’s absence. Due to the variety and timings of the Centre’s programmes, you will need to be able to work flexibly, including shift patterns and weekends.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Drive, lead, promote and assist in the delivery and running of programmes, liaising with other centre staff when required. This is to ensure customer satisfaction, due regard to client groups and to support the learning principles of the Centre
  • Assist and lead in the monitoring, mentoring, training, advice and staff selection for staff, trainees, volunteers and students
  • Mentor Centre Assistants and Trainees
  • Oversee the Senior Instructor in their responsibility of the activity equipment
  • Adhere to all centre guidance notes, policies and operating procedures whilst carrying out duties
  • In conjunction with the Centre Manager, contribute and take part in the development of the Centre’s vision, profile and promotion to sustain its future
  • Lead the whole Centre operation in the absence of the Centre Manager to ensure the smooth and safe running of the Centre, maintaining the operating procedures, risk assessments and guidance notes
  • Assessing any aspect of programme logistics to ensure safe and appropriate delivery of the service. To change and give guidance as deemed necessary in conjunction with the Centre Manager as required - Risk assessing Instructor’s decision making, activity application and programme logistics
  • Plan and prepare course materials, programmes and staffing
  • Create and review HSE risk assessments, policies, operating procedures and guidance notes
  • To allocate tasks and guidance to the domestic and administrative staff, site agent and external agencies in accordance with the Centre’s operating procedures, risk assessments and guidance notes
  • The deployment of activity staff and venue choice when programmes are running
  • Maintain qualifications/CPD as required and extend qualifications to suit programme
  • Any other ad-hoc duties in keeping with the position

Essential criteria:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject or appropriate vocational qualification
  • MIA
  • BCU/WCA Level 2 in Canoe or Kayak or UKCC level 1
  • D1 plus E or PSV and trailer endorsement
  • Driving license
  • 1 other qualifications from either MIA ( or above  ) BCU level 3, sea or canoe or inland ( or above ) or UKCC level 2 ( or above ) or Mine Leader L2

To be successful in the role you must:

  • Be an established and excellent practitioner with considerable experience of working within an outdoor education/ adventure residential centre delivering a wide range of adventurous – outdoor education activities
  • Have the ability to demonstrable commitment to a high level of ethos underpinning outdoor education, and able to demonstrate the ability to bring change as and when needed
  • Have proven ability of analyses and ability to produce reports; being proficient in the use of word, excel, PowerPoint, and have the confidence to deliver of lectures
  • Ability to meet deadlines and possess excellent personal organisational skills
  • Have proven team leadership experience with the ability to make decisions, give advice, adapt to situations and deal with emergencies
  • Robust experience of leading and efficiently managing areas of responsibility coupled with knowledge of programming and staffing logistics within an outdoor centre environment
  • A clear understanding and proven experience of HSE issues, risk assessments, guidance notes and operating procedures relating to the workings of an outdoor education centre
