Category Planning Manager - Electrical (Parental Leave, Part Time)

The Category planning team will be the hub of activity within in the workplace, and are a key team into executing and delivering exciting ranges and promotions to our customers.

You will have a good working relationship with many other teams, such as Buying, Forecast and Ordering, Space Range and Merchandising, and Marketing teams, to name but a few.

The category planning teams are the gatekeepers of the WSSI and Price.



Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the roles key responsibilities and measures:

  • Manage the profitability of the department (in-store and online) by owning the ranging and promotions critical paths and setting product price. Leading a team of Assistant Category Planners
  • Using customer insight to inform the range building process (incl. developing appropriate clustering and overlays)
  • Owning departmental range building process (working with SRD), ensuring the best range to meet customer and Tesco's needs (incl. maximising sales, profit density and space) always looking for opportunities and identifying gaps
  • Owning the department range launch critical path, tracking the process and resolving issues
  • - Owning the departmental promotions process and critical path (incl. briefing buying teams, overseeing deal loading)
  • - Overseeing and ensuring the ranging systems/ trackers for all channels are accurately maintained by my team
  • - Inputting to the annual trade plan for the department, liaising with the Trade Planning team
  • - Managing departmental Weekly Sales & Stock Intake (WSSI), addressing gaps between forecast and budget
  • - Conducting budget phasing (as per strategy day doc - expand please)
  • - Overseeing Monday Trade Reporting and linked meetings/ next steps taking action in response to trading conditions including changes to weekly pricing/ markdown
  • - Following our Business Code of Conduct and always acting with integrity and due diligence
  • - Developing and leading a high performing team, giving them their opportunity to do their best
  • - Forecasting and managing my budgets effectively, always being cost conscious
  • This role will best suit an individual who enjoys working as part of a team, is well organised, pragmatic and a lateral thinker with an inquisitive mind who is motivated to make change for the better and, most importantly, puts our customers first.


Youll need to have demonstrated experience of:

  • Data analysis, data interpretation and numeracy skills.
  • Competent in using Excel.
  • Familiar with using other Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Outlook.
  • Experience in an FMCG retailer (ideally multichannel)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Understanding of the range building process
  • Understanding of trade and events planning
  • End to End promotions process management
  • Category management (from strategy/ planning to exit management)
  • WSSI management
  • Understanding of supply chain processes

  • Flexibility, ability to plan and organise, responsiveness, creativity, self-starter
  • Able to build solid working relationships with peers and senior leadership
  • Ability to demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organisation.
