Overview of the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Afternoon Tea Manager to join our Garden Room team.

With views across sweeping manicured lawns all the way to the Minster, The Garden Room is the grand centrepiece of the Principal York Hotel, the luxurious drawing room allows visitors and hotel guests alike to enjoy the opulent surroundings with a warming drink and tempting treat.

Serving tea sourced from the Rare Tea Company and fabulous cakes and pastries all made by our in-house pastry team; afternoon tea is the signature moment in The Garden Room. Our afternoon tea offering includes traditional afternoon tea, children’s afternoon tea, as well as early evening twilight tea for those guests looking for something a little bit different.

As our Afternoon Tea Manager you will be responsible for leading the team to provide and maintain our high performance standards whilst always looking at ways to improve the quality of service for our guests.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of beverage and menu items, particularly in relation to afternoon tea, enabling you to answer guest queries with confidence.
  • Motivate the team to deliver exceptional service to every guest, every time, building rapport and going above and beyond to surprise and delight our guests.
  • Identify appropriate opportunities to upsell and actively encourage and incentivise the team to upsell.
  • Ensure all monies are handled correctly and all room/main accounts charges are signed for.
  • Conduct regular training with the team to ensure their menu and service knowledge remains up to date and identify and support colleagues looking for further development.
  • Delegate duties to colleagues in a positive manner, leading by example and monitoring their task completion.
  • Ensure all opening and closing procedures are adhered to and the Garden Room remains well presented at all times.
  • Attend the weekly operations meeting to confirm forthcoming booking/events and ensure any preparation is complete in a timely manner prior to the event.
  • Assist in the departmental induction for all new colleagues and ensure all training documentation is recorded.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You will be financially aware, an excellent communicator and a hands on manager with exceptional attention to detail.
  • You will have a passion for hospitality and guest service, and recognise the importance of giving exceptional service to guests going the extra mile to surprise and delight.
  • You will also be enthusiastic, flexible and willing to learn with a professional, prompt and caring attitude.
  • It is essential for this role that you have previous experience in a supervisory/management role within a high end food and beverage environment.
