Overview / Purpose of Role

  • Full responsibility and accountability for leading a gym based customer engagement with “high risk” customer interventions in a fun and inclusive environment. Responsible for fitness programming within the leisure centre including the management of group exercise and individual programming.
  • To be at the forefront in fitness innovation, introducing new innovative ideas around product and programming to support our evolving Health and Fitness offer, thereby resulting in the delivery of centre business Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

Job Context

The post holder reports to General Manager, is responsible for Studio Coordinators and Fitness Instructors and will work closely with the Group Sales and Fitness Manager and other departments within their centre and the organisation as a whole.

  • The post holder will be required to work some evenings, weekends and occasional public holidays in order to meet service requirements
  • The post holder will be required to wear a uniform and to ensure that all staff adhere to this dress code

Key Tasks and Accountabilities:

Key tasks and accountabilities are intended to be a guide to the range and level of work expected of the post holder. This is not an exhaustive list of all tasks that may fall to the post holder and employees will be expected to carry out such other reasonable duties which may be required from time to time.

To undertake all responsibilities listed below:

Business Management

  • Responsibility for developing and leading a member/customer engagement programme (supported by Group Sales and Fitness Manager and General Manager) focused on customer results and increasing average membership length through regular usage.
  • Train and install a culture within fitness teams of ‘product value’ so that they have confidence in promoting our product and its value for money to customers and prospective members. Support both the sales team, and retention teams to achieve financial targets
  • Work closely with the General Manager in order to support achievement of their financial and quality KPis.
  • Understand and return management information to key stakeholders in a detailed, timely and accurate manner
  • Effective management of key functional areas to deliver or exceed revenue budgets and control costs to at or below budgets.
  • Ensure studio and gym areas are clean and safe at all times and that any maintenance issues are resolved in timely fashion keeping customers suitably aware.

Team Management

  • Be the role model for health and fitness, with the knowledge and standards excellence to promote our product with integrity.
  • Recruit, develop and manage employed fitness team in line with company procedures and self-employed personal trainers and instructors to ensure that they have the right capabilities, behaviours and enthusiasm to deliver quality, engagement, member results and commercial objectives.
  • Overall responsibility for the rota, in addition to leading the activities of the team to ensure that they provide our members with a great service and effective exercise coaching.
  • Lead and manage of the fitness team in promoting and selling other added value fitness and other services.
  • Role will be shift based to match business requirements. At least one shift per week to operationally manage the centre as Duty Manager, however there may be times where more operational shifts will be required.

Group Exercise

  • Ownership and responsibility of group exercise programming including aqua classes: studio classes, paid courses, gym floor group activity; health and fitness seminars for customers/members.

Protecting Staff and Services

Adherence to Health and Safety requirements and proper risk management is required from all employees in so far as is relevant to their role. All employees are expected to understand and promote good Health and Safety practices and manage risks appropriately.

The criteria listed in this Person Specification are all essential to the job.

Experience

  • REPs level 3 qualified or equivalent
  • Is an experienced group exercise co-ordinator/manager, fitness manager and or equivalent
  • Has proven experience in effectively designing and managing group and individual fitness programmes, and also is able to teach group exercise
  • Has proven management experience including managing performance, improving potential, and effectively leading teams
  • Has experience of developing strong talent pools and succession plans within their team, and has been involved in training others with regard to technical development.
  • Has produced management information, and instigated action to improve performance and results
  • Is able to demonstrate how they have worked with the wider centre teams e.g. working with sales teams regarding the sales support with prospects, managing costs of department with the General Manager etc.

OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Willingness and ability to work occasional evenings and weekends to maintain service delivery.
