Senior Maintenance Engineer - HMP Dovegate

Location - Staffordshire

Salary - £31,000

 

Key Purpose

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Senior Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of work and the allocation of tasks, the tracking of work progress, stock management, and ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance plans meet the needs of both the operational demands of the establishment as well as the contractual requirements as set by the customer.

 

The Senior Engineer is a critical role in the delivery of hard and soft FM services whose focus should be on delivering against service levels managed by Key Performance Indicators and leading a culture of supporting the needs of the operational line in a challenging environment.

 

The Senior Engineer supports the Facilities Manager in delivering hard and soft FM services including:

  • Planned and reactive maintenance;
  • Management of contractors and specialist service providers;
  • Acting as an Approved Person to review risk assessments and method statements and permitting and controlling work;
  • Managing soft services such as cleaning, waste management, sanitation and pest control across the establishment
  • Supporting Industries within the establishment;
  • Providing first line leadership and management and deputising for the Facilities Manager

The role acts as the link between the skilled and semi-skilled trades that report to the role and FM management.

 

Operational Excellence

 

  • Assist in the development of maintenance plans that ensure that the establishment is safe and compliant both with statutory demands and with the requirements of the contract;
  • Plan and programme maintenance activities according to the SFG20 programme held in the CAFM system prioritising work in a hierarchy of safety, compliance, and contractual requirements;
  • Allocate work according to the demands of the maintenance plan to trades staff on a daily basis;
  • Track, monitor and manage the progress of work and the productivity of staff to delivering the daily work plan. Provide appropriate challenge and assurance to ensure that work is delivered to the highest standards;
  • Ensure that activities are risk assessed and managed in accordance with approved method statements;
  • Ensure that tools and equipment are regularly inspected and are used in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications;
  • Oversee the work of contractors and ensure that they are behaving in a manner consistent with the risk assessments and method statements and that their work quality is regularly assessed and audited;
  • Act as an Approved Person for one or more of HV/LV electrical work (where qualified), pressure systems, confined spaces, work at height, and hot works

 

 

People Management

 

  • Provide first line leadership (in line with Serco’s Governing Principles) such that all employees under the post holder’s supervision understand the tasking which the post holder is responsible for allocating, and are actively monitored and managed to ensure high levels of productivity;
  • Maintain and seek to improve the safety culture and health/wellbeing within the team.
  • Organise the operation in a highly effective manner, ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance is delivered in accordance with contractual demands;
  • Foster a culture within the team that reflects Serco’s core values of Trust, Care, Pride and Innovation
  • Administer leave, sickness absence, expenses, and overtime in line with Serco policy;

Deputise for the Facilities Manager in his/her absence in dealing with staff management and development.

 

Essential Qualifications/ Experience

  • Educated to GCSE level including maths and English
  • Holding a qualification as either an Approved Electrician (JIB) with 17th edition or with HVAC qualifications including COCN1, ICPN1 TCP1, CDGA1, CIGA1, BMP1. HABC L3 Award in the Control of Legionella
  • Electrical or Mechanical qualification as listed above;
  • Experience of managing HVAC systems using a BMS (Trend or Honeywell being an advantage);
  • Qualified as an Approved Person for permitted work and understanding of how to control contractors;
  • Experience of managing diverse teams of qualified, skilled, and semi-skilled staff;
  • Experience of managing workflow and supervising work to achieve desired outcomes in terms of quality and (productivity;
  • Experience a variety of HVAC and electrical systems and fault finding and diagnosis of common faults and rectifying them;
