LZ Seasonal Keeper - Herpetology (Full-Time / Seasonal)

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. Role Profile

ZSL is looking for a Seasonal Keeper in our Herpetology section. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake daily animal husbandry duties to ensure a high standard of animal welfare. They will undertake daily checks, and keep records of, animal health and behaviour, and report these to senior members of the team. As well as experience working with amphibians and reptiles in captivity, good communication skills, experience of dealing with the public, and the ability to work effectively within a team are essential.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting with all aspects of animal husbandry (excluding venomous and dangerous species/individuals) and care of equipment and facilities on a daily basis.
  • Identifying and reporting suspected problems with animals.
  • Preparation and presentation of approved diets.
  • Ensuring that safety and emergency procedures and protocols are followed at all times.
  • Maintaining courteous and helpful relations with visitors.
  • Reporting defects and repairs required to the Team Leader or more senior staff.
  • Assisting in various projects, including exhibit and enclosure construction, related to animal management as directed by senior animal management staff.

Person Specification

  • Practical experience of working with amphibians and reptiles in captivity, and a basic understanding of current heating, lighting and water quality theory for these taxa.
  • A scientific and evidence based approach to animal keeping.
  • Be able to demonstrate initiative and a pro-active approach to identifying and completing tasks.
  • An understanding of the role of modern zoos in conserving wildlife.
  • Engaging customer service and communication skills.
