What is the most common mistake made in applications and interviews?
Spelling and grammatical mistakes in covering letters, covering letters and CV's which are too long, too much emphasis on education on CV's presented by experienced individuals, CV's which are too wordy, too much emphasis on job history of previous positions which have no bearing on position applied for, not providing details on key responsibilities and achievement in current job.
What is your top tip when applying for a job?
Before applying; match your CV to the job and try to not make your CV look generic.
Before interview; find out about the company and its business before attending the interview.
What is your most embarrassing interview moment?
Interviewing someone who bought me as a slave when I was being auctioned during my university days! I will not expand on what I was made to do!!
What is your favourite interview question?
What is the capital of Uruguay? I've never actually asked this, but one day I'll just throw it in and see what happens!!

Anything from 0-4x a week
What do you see as the biggest problem facing recruiters in the fitness industry and what measures do you think will help overcome them?
London will continue to be the biggest growth area, especially for us but the cost of living is so ridiculously high, and salaries are still so low that it is difficult to find good staff at Instructor level. Also the industry is growing so quickly that good employees are finding they can achieve a GM position of a small club within 3-5 years. This will lead to a lot of inexperienced managers in the industry.
Is there anything you are aiming to implement this year for staff or management that you are not currently doing e.g. new training in house?
A number of initiatives but will not reveal as yet.

Have any of the European laws affected your job or policies?
Very much so, European law relating to the working time directive will inevitably have a major impact on all health and fitness clubs. Possibly the biggest impact is yet to come regarding the rights of part time workers. We wait with baited breath as to the outcome of this. Health and safety is another area and the recording measures which need to be implemented is creating a huge amount of paper work for staff at all levels
How did you get involved in the fitness industry?
By chance, didn't know what I wanted when I graduated, then a job as an instructor came up in my local club and the rest is history.
