What is the most common mistake made in applications and interviews?
Spelling mistakes are common and avoidable. Also in an interview situation not knowing about the company, not taking interest or having questions, does not show the attitude employers are looking for.
What annoys you the most in applications and interviews?
Personal Statements - everyone says the same standard lines e.g. reliable, motivated team player. This section would be better used as a summary of relevant skills and experience.
What is your top tip when applying for a job?
Remember to keep focussed on the objectives of each stage of the application process. The purpose of a CV is to get interview, then the interview is to get the job. The CV needs to be brief and concise to allow the recruiter to match you with their requirements.
What was your biggest nightmare interview?
I was actually asked out by the candidate who may I say did not get the job.
What is your most embarrassing exercise outfit/garment you have worn?
The first reception uniform I was issued was in fact a dental uniform. Clinically boring and unflattering.
What is your favourite form of exercise?
Currently I am enjoying and benefiting from stabalising exercises with a swiss ball.
How often do you get a chance to work out?
Four days a week.
What do you see as the biggest problem facing recruiters in the fitness industry and what measures do you think will help overcome them?
There is a skill and experience shortage. We are looking to find employees with the right attitude, and will develop them with our fab in-house training programme. We also will be looking at job share opportunities to allow valuable staff greater life flexibility.
What is your favourite food?
Toasted peanut butter, banana and jam sandwiches.

Have any of the European laws affected your job or policies?
Any legislation effect everyone although the single largest law effecting us currently are the new procedures regarding part time workers.
How did you get involved in the fitness industry?
I started at Holmes Place as a part time receptionist whilst I was studying a degree in political science. At the time I had no idea this would be my career. My motivation at the time was money and gym membership.
Approximately how many CVs does your organisation receive in the average week?
We receive approximately 100-150 CV's to our head office per week. This number we receive again directly to our facilities.
Approximately how many users does your organisation have?
Nearly 200,000 (a group total of 10 members to every member of staff).
Europe, how successful do you think English clubs will be?
HP have proved that British operators can be enormously successful as proved by our existing penetration of the European Market.
What is your favourite animal?
Cats / big cats
What are the most difficult staff to recruit?
Middle management are in short supply due to the rapid growth we have experienced.
What is the thing you like most about the health and fitness industry?
Energy levels
What is the thing you like least about the health and fitness industry?
Shift work.
