Career Champion

Name: Lauren Gibbs
Company: Fitness First
Position: General Manager, Romford

What does your role involve?

My role involves the operation of Fitness First Romford from Managing my HODs and their teams to training and progressing them forward for their own carrers within Fitness First. I have a tight control on my P&L daily to ensure I am providing a profit for my club and hitting all budgets set over monthly, quarterly and annual periods.

I also Cluster 2 other clubs in the South East Region and act as a training support Manager to these teams. I have recently become a Mentor to 2 Sales Managers in 2 other clubs to develop their skills in becoming General Managers in the near future themselves.

What do you love about what you do?

I love the environment of Fitness First clubs. Meeting new and interesting people everyday and being able to have the opertunity to help them in some way. Changing members lives and helping them acheive the results they want and providing my employees with the knowledge required to do a great job.

What’s the most challenging thing about your work?

The most challenging thing about my job is leaving when you have finished work. The clubs have such a great vibe in the evening with so many members training, classes full, staff running around busy and great music creating a great environment to be in. It’s hard to leave because its such a friendly atmosphere.

What do you do outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy socialising with my friends and spending time with my family. I always give myself small challenges to tackle for example taking an NVQ course or training in a new skill for something. I have now passed my tanning course and can travel within my area for mobile spray tanning. I also enjoy training in my free time to keep my fitness levels up and lead by example in the industry in which I work.

What has been the highlight of your time at Fitness First?

My highlight of my time at Fitness First was the day I received a call from my RBM offering me the club I had my eyes set on for 4 years. My dream club to be the General Manager of finally became mine.

I also love the GM Summits and Momentums every year. It’s great to meet up with all the teams in other clubs, share stories, let your hair down for a night and have a reunion with people you have worked with for years.

What’s your advice for someone considering a career in the fitness industry?

The fitness industry is a great place to work. Your day is never the same therefore your time does not merge into each other and you enjoy going to work to experience a new challenge every day.

I have worked for another fitness company and can truly say if you want to join the industry for a career then Fitness First is the best place to be. Ensure you take on ideas from wherever you work as you can always develop these into bigger and better things within our industry. Be open minded and attend every course available to you in order to have an understanding of the company. This in turn will upskill you to perform in the best possible way.
