Group Exercise

Aerobics instructors and studio co-ordinator jobs are ideal for some but do not always offer the stability that others require. To get an aerobics instructor job you will need to be qualified, see www.exerciseregister.org and www.premierglobal.co.uk.

Once you are a qualified group exercise instructor then you can start getting bookings. The more courses you have, the greater the variety of employment opportunities that awaits you. Most jobs in aerobics instruction are self employed and many instructors work in a number of clubs in any one area to make up the hours. It is recommended you get trained in a variety of classes both low and high impact as no one can teach high impact all day, and it is often not in demand all day. Other styles might include aquafit, anti and post natal, cardio re-hab and group exercise.

You can find a dedicated aerobics instructor resource on www.jumpybumpy.com.

Things to watch out for is insurance and royalties for the music you play. Many instructors are self employed. To look into this you may choose to register as a company for tax purposes although there are less benefits in this since the last budget. You will need to complete an end of year with the Inland Revenue and Companies House. There are distinct different styles in the studio sector and you may need to take different courses in order to teach i.e. exercise to music course does not entitle you to teach spin cycling. You can also get different set pieces you can sign up to where you take an instruction training course and then you are sent different routines to teach to your class. An example of this is Boxercise.
