E-mailing your CV is an easy process, but if no one has informed you how to do it, it could take you a long time to send successfully.

File format

The first important point to note is that most of the people you are trying to contact will be likely to operate on Microsoft software, which means that they will be able to open most Word documents. All current PCs can open TEXT documents.

If you are not writing your CV in Word or TEXT you will need to save the document in one of these formats, using the save as command. This option is usually found under the save option on the file scroll down menu.

After you have saved the document check that it is still in a readable layout. For instance if you have processed your CV using Claris Works Macintosh software, and a feature of the presentation is bullet points, if you then save the file as text it will remove all bullet points and tags, as TEXT is the most basic of all formats.

You will also need to check the file name of your CV. A CV saved as a Windows file should be followed by suffix .doc, and a text file should be saved with the file name suffix of .text. If the correct suffix is not attached when the recruiter receives the CV they will not be able to open it.

Sending your e-mail

Once your file is ready to send, open your e-mail package and select the option to edit attachments or the button called attach with a paper clip icon.

Click on the button / option and you will be given the opportunity to browse your files and find the CV from the file that you have saved it in. When you find the desired version of your CV you can either double click on it or select it and click on the attach button. When you send your e-mail the file will go as an attachment to be opened by the recipient.
