ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries around the world and through education and engagement at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile:

You will be experienced in the realm of Protected Area Management, either as a practitioner or in delivering training, and with a passion for capacity building. Your goal will be to develop blended learning courses in Protected Area management, both on- and off-line, working in close collaboration with multiple stakeholders.

Based in London, the post-holder will sit within ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department and work closely with internal and external technical experts and stakeholders, as well as with external e-learning partner Avado, and the other United for Wildlife partners. International travel is required to meet with regional collaborators and define off-line activities. The ability to interact with and manage a diverse range of partners and contributors will be essential.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work both independently and with other relevant experts, the online learning Committee and Board members, the technical implementer Avado, and the project team, to develop and create online learning materials.
  • Work both independently and with other relevant experts, the partner training institutes, the learning Committee and Board members, and the project team, to develop and create at-site learning materials, and course evaluation protocols. Ensure that the materials developed for in-situ training deliver standardised quality of tuition across the board.
  • Developing the course curriculum to include course content outlines, for approval by subject matter experts and the Course Content Steering Committee prior to content development, including consulting with users and other technical experts and institutions to establish training needs. Define which sections of each course will be taught online vs. in-situ.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have extensive experience in designing and delivering training programmes around Protected Area Management, and/or as a Protected Area Manager.
  • Be educated to post-graduate degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification or have relevant work experience. Holding an educational qualification in addition would be advantageous.
  • Be able to develop positive working relationships with a range of people internally and externally.
  • Have an excellent understanding of online learning as an educational and awareness-raising tool, and the challenges and opportunities specific to an online environment.
  • Creative, confident and articulate presentation and communication skills.
  • The ability to design learning materials and an understanding of learner needs, including the development of appropriate learning objectives.

Please note: This is a full-time, one year fixed-term contract position, available immediately, with the opportunity for extension to the full project period of 4.5 years subject to funding.
