Why become a course tutor?

What are the qualification requirements? 

You will need to have the nationally recognised qualification in the discipline you are teaching. Of course, employers will like to maximise your skills and therefore, being qualified in a number of different disciplines will increase your chances of employment e.g. having a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training as well as circuits, group indoor cycling and exercise referral means you can teach more courses for your employer.

In addition, you will need a Level 3 Award in Education and Training as a minimum. This certificate is awarded by YMCA Awards and is recognised by all training providers in the UK.

What are the job & salary prospects like?

 While there is never a guarantee of gaining a position, you will find many training providers are always looking for good, dedicated course tutors. Skills Active, REPs and all the Awarding Organisations such as YMCA Awards now require anyone teaching any course, whether it be a nationally recognised qualification or a Continued Professional Development course, have this Level 3 Award in Education & Training. So if you wish to teach any course for any training provider, you will need this qualification.

A full-time position will start at around £22K and increase to over £40K, depending on your experience and location.

 Your employment prospects would greatly increase if you had additional qualifications such as the Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement and the Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Process and Practice (IQA).
