MILES JENKINS:

Started as: Head Squash Professional

“All staff look to help one another which builds a great team environment."

I started my role as Head Squash Professional here, only 7 months ago. The staff and members quickly made me feel welcome and at home. This was a big change from living in Birmingham where I was coaching for 10 years, but one I knew would be well worth it. The Club is one of only four in the UK that holds an all-glass exhibition show court, this presents itself with opportunities to host elite events, tournaments, and work with professional players. The strong cohort of squash members has made my role very enjoyable; they give me support and freedom to provide a programme for adults and juniors that facilitates their needs.

The Club is always looking for ways to move forward, developing new infrastructure, additional facilities and are host to an array of events that meet member’s needs. You need to be passionate, hardworking and willing to go the extra mile to work here. All staff look to help one another which builds a great team environment.

PIERS HERFET-JONES:

Started as: Tennis Professional
Now: Tennis Manager

“I feel fortunate enough to work at one of the most prestigious Tennis Clubs in the UK".

I joined the Club in April 2021 as a Tennis Professional and in February 2023 I was appointed Tennis Manager. The entire membership and staff team are very supportive, and the Club is a very friendly and inspiring place to work. I have worked in small and large private members clubs, but what sets St George's Hill LTC apart is how everyone gets involved and helps out, no matter how big or small the task is. From a tennis perspective, we are extremely fortunate to have 34 tennis courts, with 13 of them being arguably some of the best grass courts in the country, as well as 2 indoor courts. Our fantastic tennis facilities attract experienced coaches and elite athletes, which allows us to offer an extensive tennis offering to all members.

MARIA KIMBER-CRANE:

Started as: Swimming Coach
Now: Head Swimming Professional

“Teaching a life skill that opens doors of opportunity in the water is one of the most rewarding of professions"

I joined the Club teaching and coaching over 10 years ago having already gained valuable swim teaching qualifications and experience. Originally, I was a Senior Buyer with a blue-chip company and returning to swimming presented an opportunity that offered greater flexibility given my family circumstances at the time. When a position at St George’s Hill LTC became available, this made the task of bringing up two young boys in education that little bit easier as my home is a stone throw from the Club.

Teaching a life skill that opens doors of opportunity in the water is one of the most rewarding of professions. I absolutely love to teach adult and baby classes as well as our juniors through to adults at the Club.

The swim school at St George’s Hill LTC has grown significantly over the years and undergone several changes and the commitment of the swim team to provide a quality coaching experience has been unquestionable.

The swim team that I have had the pleasure to work with have always endeavoured to teach in a fun and enjoyable way to our members’ children and adults alike, irrespective of ability.

It is truly a pleasure to work daily with the children and to see them grow and see at first-hand how their personalities develop, not to mention their confidence and swim technique in the water.

Turning to the adults, it is always most gratifying to put those attending the weekly Adult Swim Training sessions through their paces. There are members attending regularly so classes become more challenging week by week!

The Club strives to create an atmosphere for staff to flourish in their chosen careers whilst having fun in the process. Hopefully, this in turn adds to the Members experience and enjoyment in whatever engagement they have with the Club.

KATIE SARGEANT:

Started as: Part-Time Spa Therapist
Now: Senior Spa Therapist

"I have really enjoyed myself working here and each year gets better as the Club develops"

I work in the Spa here at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club, and have done since I joined in 2011 after getting my Beauty Diploma at College. I started off part-time but moved to being full-time four months later. I accepted the job at the Club because I liked the ethos of a members’ club and wanted to work with clients who return regularly. I also liked the fact that, because the Spa is smaller than some others, I would get better exposure to a variety of work.

There’s a good working atmosphere here – it’s modern and progressive. To work here, I think you need to be friendly and professional at all times, and that includes being well-presented and having a professional demeanour. Flexibility is important in a job with shift hours such as this, as are team-working skills. We support each other in our work here.

I have really enjoyed myself working here and each year gets better as the Club develops. I like working closely with my clients, who are lovely people. The Members really make my job enjoyable as they are so nice to work with. Last summer I was promoted to Senior Spa Therapist after speaking to my manager about career development opportunities. I’m really grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to develop the skills needed to run a spa on a day-to-day basis. "
