As Sous Chef you will have a passion for food and enjoy inspiring a team to deliver great results and exceed customer’s expectations. Joining our fast paced, passionate team working at an amazing location you will assist the head chef in managing the day to day operation of a busy kitchen operating breakfast and lunch service and production of fresh homemade products, you will work alongside the catering management team driving catering operations across 6 outlets including restaurants, cafes, BBQ’s and Kiosk.

You will work with our outdoors teams selecting produce from our walled kitchen garden for use in our everyday dishes and working with the National Trust Cookbook framework assisting in delivering The National Trusts strategic objectives including plot to plate, farm to form, soil association and food for life.

What it's like to work here

Clumber Park is true to its spirit as a place of recreation; there are 20 miles of cycle route and 3,800 acres of parkland, woodland and heathland. Although the mansion was demolished in 1938, many original Clumber Park estate features survive including a superb 19th-century glasshouses, which incorporate a palm house, vineries and working apiary.

We’re really proud of our Garden Tea House. Situated next to the historic Walled Kitchen Garden, this spectacular 19th century building which used to be the old head gardeners house, boasts a stunning interior complete with original fireplaces, shimmering chandeliers and its own twisted staircase. It's truly a magnificent place to work. Our team of dedicated chefs base their menu on the seasons and inspired by the spectacular surroundings. They use the finest locally sourced ingredients taking advantage of the home-grown fruits and vegetables from the on-site Walled Kitchen Garden.

At our main café visitors can enjoy a selection of our home-made cakes, biscuits and cream teas. We have a barbeque at peak times and also cater for a number of weddings throughout the year and making in-house beautiful wedding deserts. We also have a second hand book shop and a soft play areas for children which provides light refreshments, catering for all ages.

What you'll be doing

Working alongside the Head Chef you'll always consider how we can do it better, more efficiently, and how we can deliver an even tastier end result for the visitor. We want to hear your ideas: we want to know what else we can do to get our customers talking and tasting. From mouth-watering food, to attentive service, to little touches that make a big difference, your catering know-how and painstaking attention to detail, will ensure that every visitor has an incredible experience.

We’ll help you be the best you can be. It’s going to be hard work and you’ll certainly be busy. But you’re never on your own. We all help each other; we’re all pulling in the same direction. Who we're looking for

You’ll have experience of working as a cook or chef in a fast paced environment assisting in team people management, You’re used to working with people of all ages and backgrounds and you love the buzz of being at the heart of a busy, often high pressured catering environment. You’ll also have the drive and vision to develop our offer in order to position catering at Clumber Park as an essential part of any visit. You will be able to demonstrate and show the following:

  • Be passionate about food
  • Have experience of working with stock management system (although not essential as training will be provided)
  • A good team player
  • Creative and proactive
  • Basic IT skills
  • Great understanding of cost control
  • Proud to deliver exceptional customer service
  • Aware of good working knowledge of Health & Safety compliance requirements
