Putney Library is looking for a new weekend Senior Library Assistant (Part Time 9.25 hours per week, working every Saturday and alternate Sundays), for this highly regarded library, operated by GLL in the London Borough of Wandsworth. With c.220,000 issues and c185,000 visitors per year, this large Town Centre library has an excellent reputation for user and community engagement among the local population.

With community at the heart of everything we do, as a Senior Library Assistant, you will ensure that every visitor to the Library is welcomed into a clean, safe and attractive environment with useful facilities that keep them wanting to return. As a key frontline member of staff, you will adapt to, and acknowledge, the diversity of our visitors and what they aim to get out of their library visit as well as helping them to discover our wide range of resources and services. Your passion for libraries and community engagement will be apparent as you help people do everything from discovering new authors to tracking their ancestry from our records and even helping them find their ideal job using our IT systems.

You will ideally come from a library background, but it will be your enthusiasm for helping others and devotion to customer care that makes you really stand out. Naturally good with people, you will be able to put people of all ages and backgrounds at ease whilst helping to promote our services. Organised, efficient and thriving on variety, you will be just as competent using IT and library management systems as you are running story times for our younger audience. It goes without saying that you will need excellent numeracy, literacy and communication skills, alongside administrative skills, knowledge of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and the processes involved with the security and operation of a public building. As a senior member of the team you will be responsible for supervising the work of others and have cashing and locking up responsibilities.

In return, we offer:

  • Pension
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Ride to work scheme
  • Discounted membership at our leisure centres
  • The opportunity to join the GLL Society and have a say in how we are run plus associated social events
  • Career pathways
  • Ongoing training and development

If you have the passion and skills for this role, apply now.

All pay rates are subject to skills, experience, qualifications, age and location.

To be shortlisted for the role, internal applicants will need to demonstrate their commitment to GLL by becoming a Society member where eligible.
