Become a Fitness Course Assessor
Why become an Assessor?
As a qualified fitness professional you will have spent years developing your skills and setting the standards. As an assessor, you will help set that standard for the next generation of fitness professionals and personal trainers.
What in involved in assessing?
Awarding Organisations such as YMCA Awards and Active IQ set the assessment strategy for many fitness qualifications including the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training & Level 2 Exercise to Music. As an assessor, you will follow their assessment strategy and grade learners against a strict set of criteria. Practical observation makes up a large portion of assessing however there are also learner portfolios which must be marked.
What are the qualification requirements?
You will need to have the nationally recognised qualification in the discipline you are assessing. Of course, employers will like to maximise your skills and therefore, being qualified in a number of different disciplines will increase your chances of employment e.g. having a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training as well as circuits, group indoor cycling and exercise referral means you can assess learners on a number of different courses.
In addition, you will need a Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement. This certificate is awarded by YMCA Awards and is recognised by all training providers in the UK.
Am I suited to the role of Assessor?
Having a passion for fitness is the first essential skill of an assessor. The role also requires you are highly organised and not shy of paperwork. As many training providers are externally audited, all paperwork must be diligently completed to the required standards.
You must also be willing to travel as in some cases, you will be required to assess learner at THEIR place of work.
What are the job and salary expectations?
Training providers are constantly looking for assessors in our fast growing industry. If you have the skills and the qualifications, then there is bound to be a training provider who would love to utilise your skills. Of course, there is never a guarantee of employment at the end of any course, but getting the qualification is the first step.
Full-time assessors can expect to start on £18-£24K. As you gain further experience, this may increase to over £30K.
Your employment prospects would greatly increase if you had additional qualifications such as the Level 3 Award in Education and Training and the Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Process and Practice (IQA).
